In order to prove his innocence, Johnny must rescue a young girl from a cult led by the evil Keefe Braswell. Johnny agrees, but after transporting the girl he loses control of his bike and crashes into a poorly maintained farmhouse. The next day, Keefe discovers the crash site and finds the unconscious Johnny inside it. He takes Johnny to a nearby abandoned mine and forces him to watch as his young daughter is set upon by a pack of viciously aggressive dogs. Keefe then takes Johnny into his nearby trailer where he subjects him to a series of disturbing experiments before revealing that Keefe is himself an immortal being from beyond the dark side of the moon called the Ghost Rider. In order to be with his love, Butch, Keefe has been transforming himself into various demonic beings in order to gain more followers and become even stronger. Keefe then reveals that Johnny is actually his brother and swears revenge for all of the years he was left in an orphanage. When he was twelve, Keefe and Johnny were taken in by a farmer and his wife who often abused them. One night, the two brothers decided to run away and began walking down a country road when they encounter a group of bikers. The bikers easily frighten Keefe away, but they beat up Johnny to the point where he lost consciousness.
